A proximity switch is a type of position switch that operates without mechanical direct contact with moving parts. When an object approaches the sensing surface of the switch within the operating distance, the switch can be activated without mechanical contact or applying any pressure, thereby driving DC electrical devices or providing control commands to computer (PLC) systems. A proximity switch is a type of switch sensor (i.e., a contactless switch). It has the characteristics of both limit switches and micro switches, as well as sensing capabilities. It operates reliably, has stable performance, fast frequency response, long service life, strong anti-interference ability, and features such as waterproofing, shock resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Non-shielded coil types can increase the detection distance, but because there is no object protection, they are easily affected by surrounding metals.

To prevent signal interference, the distance from the sensor surface to the detected metal object should be ≥ 3Sn (Sn: sensor sensing distance), and the distance between two adjacent proximity sensors should be ≥ D (D: sensor diameter).
Single Non-Shielded Type
Usage Method
There is no protection around the sensing coil. The sensing surface must maintain a distance of Y from the mounting surface (M5 to M8, Y=6 mm; M12, Y=9 mm).
The distance between the sensing surface and the detected metal object should be ≥ 3Sn, and the distance between two adjacent proximity sensors should be ≥ 2D (D is the sensor diameter).

Question: How long is the detection distance of the proximity sensor
Answer: The sensing distance of the proximity sensor varies depending on the size and material of the detection object. The sensing distance increases with the shape of the detection object. When the volume reaches a certain value, the sensing distance no longer increases with the shape of the detection object, and becomes a fixed value. Generally, the smallest detection object that reaches a fixed sensing distance is called a standard detection object. The standard detection object is generally a square made of iron (Fe360) with the thickness of 1mm, and the larger of the sensing surface diameter and 3 times the sensing distance is taken as the side length.
Question: What needs to be paid attention to in the sensor selection?
Answer: In terms of parameters, it is mainly necessary to determine the main parameters such as product appearance and size, detection distance, operating voltage, output mode (NPN/PNP), output form (normally open/normally closed), and also to ensure the outlet form (direct outlet/connector type), cable length, bending resistance, frequency requirements, ambient temperature requirements, waterproof and dust-proof requirements (IP degree) and other parameters of the sensor.
Question: What is the meaning of shielded and non-shielded for proximity sensors?
Answer: The shielded type sensor can be embedded in metal for use, while the non-shielded type cannot be embedded in metal, but its operating distance for detection is longer than the shielded type. Shielded type installation: The sensor is embedded in the metal base, and its effective sensing working surface is flush with the base surface. Non-shielded type installation: The sensor is not embedded in the metal base, and its effective sensing working surface must keep a certain space from its base. For proximity sensors of the same specifications, the non-shielded type can obtain the maximum sensing distance. The advantages of the sensor with shielded type installation are that they have better mechanical protection performance and stronger anti-interference ability than the sensor with unshielded type installation.
