Wedge locking mechanism

  • It is based on wedge locking technology that uses a wedge-shaped cam, and can physically prevent the bolted joint from loosening in rotation even under severe vibration and fluctuating loads.
  • Instead of using friction, the axial force of the bolted body itself prevents loosening. This system comprises a pair of washers with a cam surface on one side and a radial rib surface on the other side.
  • The cam angle (α) is designed to be larger than the screw lead angle (β), and the cam surfaces create a wedge effect each other, which prevents the bolt from loosening due to rotation. Therefore, the Nord-Lock washer can be used for fine and extra-fine items that are finer than coarse screws. On the other hand, self-tapping screws and wood screws with a larger pitch than coarse screws do not provide a sufficient thread-locker effect.
  • Although it can be reused, the maximum number of reuses depends on the amount of wear on the cam surface that occurs when the cam surface is released, so it varies depending on the axial force being fastened. In addition, if the pitch becomes finer in the fine, extra fine, etc., the amount of wear at the time of release increases, and the number of reuse limits decreases.

How to Use Nord-Lock Washers and Precautions

Please use it by attaching it between the bolt/nut and the mating material.

Since the outer diameter of the washer may be larger than the bolt head, please check the dimensions before use.

Use Nord-Lock washers on both the bolt and nut sides.
If it is used on only one side, it may loosen on the side without the Nord-Lock, so please be careful.

Wide (SP) type Nord-Lock washers with a large outer diameter are recommended. More effective when used in combination with flange bolts and nuts.

Please Avoid Using It in the Following Designs

  • Combined use with other washers such as plain washers and spring washers
  • When the mating material is harder than the Nord-Lock washer due to hardening, etc.
  • When the mating material is very soft (wood, plastic, etc.)
  • When the mating material is deeply recessed or greatly fits or , such as a thick coating layer
  • When slipping between the materials to be fastened and between the bolts and nuts is premised, as in the case with bearing
  • When axial force is not generated with the use of intermediate fastening, etc.
